WordStar 4 Delays

by Benjamin H. Cohen

In WSCHANGE there are three delays that you can set. From the main menu, hit D, then C, then F. When you have made the changes you want, hit ^X, then Y<cr>, to exit. [The tip to hit ^X is found only at the end of the Appendix dealing with WSCHANGE, which does so in such detail that most users won't read it.]

The longest delay, for sign-on, etc., is C on F sub-sub-sub-menu. I have set this value to 15. As a speed buff I don't want any delays. I have not yet seen any reason to want any delay here.

The medium delay, for menus, is D on the menu. I have set that to 300. I'm running in a RAM disk and that may make a difference. The reason for setting this delay at 300 is that sometimes you want time to hit a second character when you are entering a command and before the menu comes up. For example, when you hit [ESC] the Shorthand menu comes up. But if you want to hit [ESC]T to save the file and go to the top, you don't want the menu to flash on the screen before you can hit the T. The delay of 300 seems to be enough, but not too long for those times when you do want something to pop up (especially while you're still learning all the new features and want the help level set to 2 so that you can check the help screens).

The short delay is E on the menu. I have also set that to 15. This is for document alignment, etc., according to the WSCHANGE menu. Again, I can't see any reason for wanting any delays here.

I had originally set the longest and short delays to zero, but began to suffer a case of the spontaneous resets when I tried to print. Resetting these values to 15 seems to have cured the problem.
